![]() By nominally addressing a substantive discussion of frontier issues in theoretical physics and cosmology to a popular audience, an author deprives himself of the discipline of having to provide details, to address concrete experimental issues, or to pitch the level of his argumentation to peers capable of judging them critically. Regarded as a scientific treatise, The Road to Reality is in many ways problematic. Although Penrose’s proposal for modifying quantum theory may or may not succeed, it has a feature string theory so far lacks: a doable experiment to test it. More than that, he rejects a governing assumption of almost all post–standard model theorizing, which is that such foundational challenges as the measurement problem and quantum gravity can be ignored while physicists work on the problem of unification. This idea leads him to reject both string theory and such competing approaches as loop-quantum gravity. He reminds us of an earlier era before physicists learned to aggressively hype their ideas, an era in which the prevailing ethic called for honestly explaining the pros and cons and letting the ideas and results speak for themselves.Īt the core of Penrose’s thinking are arguments that lead him to believe that quantum mechanics must be modified to be unified with gravity. Penrose is uniquely honest in mentioning the weak points and gaps in his own favored ideas. If it is a quality of a great writer not to treat the audience like idiots, then Penrose is indeed great, and the position of this book on the bestseller lists makes sense. For anybody who wants to learn up-to-date physics at a level between standard popularization and graduate text, The Road to Reality is the only book in town. And that makes my bottom-line recommendation a cinch. then you will understand a reviewer’s inclination to hold The Road to Reality up to the highest standards, for it is, indeed, sui generis. If you compare Penrose’s work to any of the recent ones. There are a great many competing books that seek to explain the state of the art in fundamental physics. Other mathematicians may find it useful to scan The Road to Reality, if only to glimpse the extent to which mathematical constructs infuse theoretical physics. He also holds some controversial views about the role of consciousness in physics, as laid out in his earlier books (see Shadows of the Mind).įor mathematicians with a general interest in physics, Penrose’s book will be self-recommending. He is optimistic about his own approach, twistor theory. ![]() He is skeptical about string theory, to which he prefers loop quantum gravity. ![]() The final chapters reflect Penrose's personal perspective, which differs in some respects from what he regards as the current fashion among theoretical physicists. The book ends with an exploration of other theories and possible ways forward. A discussion of the measurement problem in quantum mechanics is given a full chapter superstrings are given a chapter near the end of the book, as are loop gravity and twistor theory. Energy and conservation laws appear in the discussion of Lagrangians and Hamiltonians, before moving on to a full discussion of quantum physics, particle theory and quantum field theory. From there it moves on to fields in spacetime, deriving the classical electrical and magnetic forces from first principles that is, if one lives in spacetime of a particular sort, these fields develop naturally as a consequence. Physics enters the discussion on page 383 with the topic of spacetime. The book is just over 1100 pages, of which the first 383 are dedicated to mathematics-Penrose's goal is to acquaint inquisitive readers with the mathematical tools needed to understand the remainder of the book in depth. The Road to Reality reverses this process, first expounding the underlying mathematics of space–time, then showing how electromagnetism and other phenomena fall out fully formed. Some texts, both popular and university level, introduce these topics as separate concepts, and then reveal their combination much later. Many fields that 19th century scientists believed were separate, such as electricity and magnetism, are aspects of more fundamental properties. It covers the basics of the Standard Model of particle physics, discussing general relativity and quantum mechanics, and discusses the possible unification of these two theories. The septum will fully form into new cell wall and plasma membrane, finally separating the daughter cells and completing cell division by binary fission in bacteria. This septum is similar in function to the cell plate in plant cells during cytokinesis. As the materials for the cell wall and plasma membrane accumulate, a structure called a septum forms. FtsZ aids in recruiting other proteins as well, and these proteins begin synthesizing new cell wall and plasma membrane. The FtsZ protein ring performs the role of the contractile ring in animal cells, creating a cleavage furrow. Cytokinesis begins with the formation of an FtsZ protein ring. This means the two daughter cells may have some variation in the plasmids they possess, leading to variation in the population.Ĭytokinesis in bacteria is almost a mixture of cytokinesis in animal and plant cells. Plasmids are also replicated during DNA replication, but since they are not necessary for the function and survival of the bacteria cell, they are not attached to the plasma membrane and do not get distributed evenly across the daughter cells as cytokinesis begins. Now, remember bacteria also have smaller free-floating DNA packets called plasmids that are acquired from their environment. As the chromosome is done replicating and has passed the midpoint of the growing cell, cytokinesis will begin. Genome segregation occurs continuously as the bacteria cell grows and the DNA chromosome replicates. This means that as the cell grows it also helps to separate the replicating DNA chromosomes to opposite sides of the cell beginning genome segregation. The chromosome is still attached to the cell's plasma membrane as it replicates. ![]() As the DNA is replicating, the bacterial cell is also growing. From the origin of replication, the DNA is replicated in both directions until the two replicating strands meet and DNA replication is complete.Ĭell growth. The circular DNA chromosome is attached to the cell membrane at one point, close to the origin, the site where DNA replication begins. First, the bacteria must replicate its DNA. Therefore, we can divide the binary fission process into only four steps. ![]() There is no nucleus membrane to dissolve and dividing duplicated chromosomes does not require the same amount of cell structures (like the mitotic spindle) as in the mitotic phase of eukaryotes. Thus, binary fission in bacteria differs from mitosis because this singular chromosome and lack of a nucleus make the process of binary fission much simpler. Nucleoid- the region of the prokaryotic cell that contains the single chromosome, plasmids, and packaging proteins. Below we'll go further in-depth on the process of binary fission in bacteria. This is another way binary fission differs from the cell cycle, which produces new cells (for growth, maintenance, and repair in multicellular eukaryotes) but no new individual organisms. While the daughter cells are clones, they are also individual organisms because they are prokaryotes (single-cell individuals). Just like the cell cycle, binary fission will begin with one parent cell, then replicate its DNA chromosome, and end with two genetically identical daughter cells. Binary fission is similar to the Cell Cycle because it is another process of cellular division, but the cell cycle only occurs in eukaryotic organisms. Most prokaryotic organisms, bacteria and archaea, divide and reproduce through binary fission. But cell division in prokaryotic cells is different. We have learned how eukaryotic cells divide through mitosis or meiosis. Some bacteria can reproduce every 20 minutes! To put that in perspective, at that rate, a single bacterium can grow to a colony of 250,000 within 6 hours! How is that possible? Well, it's all thanks to a process called binary fission. From washing our hands to disinfecting high-use areas such as doorknobs, desks and tables, and even our phones!īut you may wonder, how often do I really need to be washing my hands, or disinfecting surfaces? Can bacteria really reproduce that quickly? YES! Because prokaryotes, specifically bacteria, are simple compared to eukaryotes, they can reproduce much, much faster. We deal with them every day without even thinking about it. Prokaryotes, such as bacteria, are the cause of many diseases that affect humans. ![]() Organization health care providers (e.g., hospitals, home health agencies, ambulance companies) are considered Entity Type 2 (Organization) providers.
